Hell and High Water
Hell and High Water was a band I joined in 2014 with Kai Namslau (bass, backing vocals), Dennis Reher (drums, backing vocals) and David Kressin (guitars). We started as a four-piece, but recorded our first EP Bird as a trio.

We spent a lot of time in the rehearsal room, played long jams and worked very detailed on songs. Sometimes we would work on a single song for months. That was very different from how I work today, but I learned a lot during that time.

With Hell and High Water I went into a recording studio for the first time, we played band contests and suddenly found ourselves on stages like Knust or Markthalle in Hamburg. We got in touch with labels like Stickman Records and Barhill Records, played festivals like Sankt Hell at Grünspan and spent almost five years making music and playing shows.

I left Hell and High Water in early 2019 and started recording demos at home. I uploaded them to Bandcamp and shared them online. Christoph somehow found those songs and wrote to me. A few days later we met in a bar, talked about music and bands and that same evening decided to start Palila together.

Dennis has since played drums on almost all Would recordings and also mixed and mastered Need A New Old Friend. Together with Kai he now plays in Men and the Man, where they share vocal duties.

Looking back, that time was very important for me and I learned a lot about recording, arranging and working on songs.
