PALILA / WOULD
In the summer of 2024 I went on a spontaneous road trip to Scandinavia with a
friend. The original plan was simply to spend time in nature, which worked
quite well in the beginning. But somewhere along the way we heard about a metal
festival near Oslo that took place on old Viking burial grounds, and we
thought we should probably check that out. I’m not really a metal fan, but the
festival was a great experience, including a metal vocal coaching workshop.
On the way home I started thinking that it might actually be fun to try
something like that with Would.
Back home I quickly realized that metal was far beyond my technical abilities. I can’t really do metal vocals and I definitely can’t play fast enough. So that idea was abandoned pretty quickly. About six weeks later I broke my foot. At the same time my girlfriend was traveling for five weeks, so I had the flat to myself but was mostly stuck in bed and later at my desk. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I decided not to record a metal album, but to somehow process the impressions of that summer and that heavy music anyway.
Like on the other records, I ended up combining older and newer songs. Some of them go back to the Hell And High Water days, others were written during the recordings for this album. In the end it became a loud, rough and sometimes slightly chaotic record, but it was a lot of fun to make, even with a broken foot.
