PALILA / WOULD
After releasing Be Okay To Not Be Okay and Get Away, I actually
thought it might be time to let Would rest for a while. The plan was to collect
a few leftover songs and maybe release a small, mixed record with B-sides.
I also really wanted to finally release the Neil Young cover that I had
originally planned for Get Away but didn’t dare to include at the time.
While I started re-recording some older songs, new ideas kept coming up. Those songs felt too loose for Palila, but also didn’t really fit another quiet folk record. So little by little I stopped working on the old songs and instead kept writing new ones. Over time the tracklist changed completely and the album became much more cohesive than I had originally planned.
The record somehow ended up sounding lighter and more summery. I think around that time I finally understood that there are no real rules for how to do this. There is no single correct way to make records. You can record and mix things the way you think they should sound, even if it doesn’t follow any textbook mixing rules. I’m glad it took me a while, but I’m also glad that I finally understood that.
