PALILA – ROCK’N’ROLL SADNESS
2021
ABOUT THE ALBUM
This was the debut album of Palila. After Manuel had moved to Berlin and we had parted ways with our drummer Jonas, we suddenly needed a new drummer. At the same time we had applied for funding together with our new label Kapitän Platte and actually got it — which meant we had to go into the studio sooner or later.

Before the recordings we had already recorded a number of demos at home. Some of those early demo recordings from that time are included here as well, for example New York Family Plans and Rain Again, which already existed in rough demo versions before we went into the studio.

So I asked around and wrote to a few people who might know a drummer. Among them was music journalist Sascha Krüger. He listened to the demos and instead of recommending someone else, he said he might actually be interested himself. He had played drums for many years, but hadn’t really played in a long time.

It was in the middle of the lockdown, so the three of us met outside for a walk in January. It was freezing cold, but we immediately got along very well. Not long after that we started rehearsing and since the songs are not exactly rocket science, he learned them pretty quickly.

A few months later we went to K-Klangstudio in Hamburg-Ottensen with Ron Henseler and Ritchy Fondermann. Sascha already knew the studio because he had interviewed them years before and featured the studio in the book Soundlotsen.

Around that time Jörg Willerscheidt, a friend of Sascha's, organized a concert together with his band Bad Moon and the band Alle außer ich. The show took place in the summer when the lockdown rules were slowly being relaxed again.

From there on we started working more regularly again: we recorded videos, played more shows and slowly got back into a normal band routine.
