PALILA / WOULD
After Hell and High Water ended for me, I started recording some demos at
home and uploaded them to Bandcamp and social media. That’s how Christoph
found the songs and wrote to me. We met in a bar — the day after his wedding.
I remember being slightly confused but also impressed by how relaxed he was
and how much he just wanted to start making music. We got along really well
and basically decided that same evening to start a band.
Things moved pretty quickly from there. We found our drummer Manuel Tröndle, who had just moved to Hamburg from southern Germany and didn’t really know yet what he was going to do in the city. We also found a rehearsal room surprisingly fast, which is actually quite rare in Hamburg.
We recorded this first EP pretty quickly. The songs were recorded partly in the rehearsal room and partly in our living rooms. Manuel mixed the EP and also sang some backing vocals, which gave everything a nice light and relaxed feeling.
The song Sundays actually existed before in a Hell and High Water version, but I didn’t like the direction back then. We tried it again with Palila and it later became something like our evergreen and stayed in the live set for many years.
Some other songs from that time had a longer journey. Music Clips and Wheels were originally written for Palila and already existed as demos back then, but we never properly recorded them with the band. Years later they finally ended up on Would records instead, which somehow feels like a nice full circle.
In autumn we already went on a small tour and played shows in Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden and Bremen — even though the band had only existed for about half a year. Everything happened very fast and we were just happy to play shows and travel a bit. And then Corona happened.
